This position is employed by AOSS (not Jackson College) and teaches and trains at the state-of-the-art Jackson College Applied Technology Center as well as at customer locations throughout the region.

Position Summary

Teach the Trade. Build the Workforce.

The Lead Instructor — Utility Lineworker Program delivers high-quality instruction in utility linework, supports student progress, manages program execution, and ensures safety culture development.

This role requires flexibility, as classes and field instruction involve non-traditional hours including early mornings, evenings, and occasional travel for customer-site trainings.

Key Responsibilities

What You’ll Do

Instruction & Training

  • Provide instruction in utility linework including construction, maintenance, and operation of utility systems.
  • Teach 3–4 courses per semester (minimum 3 classes per semester) with syllabus and training materials provided.
  • Demonstrate and coach safe and effective climbing techniques on wooden utility poles up to 100 feet.
  • Maintain current knowledge and application of OSHA, MIOSHA, NESC, DOT, and other applicable regulations.
  • Track attendance, grades, and performance; update syllabus and curriculum as needed.
  • Assess student progression and make judgments on readiness to advance.

Program & People Management

  • Manage training schedules and organize student cohorts.
  • Oversee expectations for safety culture and performance standards.
  • Supervise lab environments, inventory, and training equipment inspections.
  • Lead and support instructional team members where applicable.
  • Serve as a representative and participant to workforce partners, building relationships for improved placement of students.

Facility & External Training

  • Ensure classroom and lab spaces are safe, operational, and conducive to learning.
  • Facilitate specialized training sessions at customer locations outside of Jackson College.
Qualifications

What It Takes

Required

  • Department of Labor-certified Journeyman Lineworker with a minimum of 3 years’ post-journey experience, OR a Utility Specialist (such as an aerial lineman, underground utility worker, cell tower technician, or similar utility infrastructure professional) with a minimum of 6 years of field experience — with the ability to safely climb poles and towers while demonstrating real-world utility infrastructure knowledge.
  • CDL — Class A License and valid Michigan Driver’s License. (If the applicant does not possess a CDL A, one must be attained within 3 months of employment.)
  • Current DOT Medical Certification.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification (Alpha Omega will provide certification if needed).
  • Strong understanding of safety standards, distribution systems, and instructional best practices.
  • Proficiency with computers and learning technologies.

Preferred

  • Previous instructional or workforce development experience.
  • Experience leading crews or managing field operations.
  • Residing within a reasonable commuting distance of Jackson, Michigan.
